Teachable +
Teachable is a new startup which wants to lessen the friction in the homeschool process. I worked in a team with five other UX designers with a different approach to the project.
My approach was to add another layer to Teachable.io with focus on an important part of the homeschool community which is called 2E community.
2E is the abbreviation for twice exceptional children who are exceptional both because of their strengths and because of their limitations. Coupled with high intelligence, these children also may have one or more learning disabilities, attention deficit, autism spectrum disorder, emotional or behavior problems, or other types of learning challenges.
Our team started with collecting data from more than 40 survey results and several conducted storytelling interviews. I also directed separate interviews with parents of 2E children to collect more data on my area of focus.
I used different methods of research to find out this community's values, their main challenges, and their needs. I used a competitive audit to understand what related websites and apps are providing for the 2E community.
During interviews and research I realized that often times, homeschooling is not just an option for 2E families, in most cases, it's a must.
To better understand the situation I created a persona, scenario, and storyboard to define multiple touchpoints based on the data that I collected. Results showed that however many challenges homeschooling parents have, there are 10 times more for 2e homeschooling parents and there is not enough immediate and organized help and support for them.
Another concern of this community was financial problems, most of these parents can’t leave home and work outside because their kids need continual care.
The main problem was:
Lack of a platform to reduce: Hopelessness, self-doubt, devastation, financial concern, thoughts of giving up.
Outcome
Design an essential multi-touchpoint mobile application to reinforce: Encouragement, hope, self-esteem, empathy, self-confidence, financial independence.
By providing conditions for 2e parents to work at home, they can get financial independence and build self-confidence in a supportive and caring community.
By providing an organized platform to help parents find other community members and mentors in a simple and convenient way.
I named the recommended mobile application Teachable +.
Teachable + is a multi-touchpoint mobile application which helps parents of twice-exceptional children to feel supported and confident during homeschooling journey. Main focus areas of the project are building a supportive community and providing financial opportunity inside the homeschool community.
I built a high-fidelity interactive prototype using InVision which covers these features, I did usability test to identify gaps or task flow issues, the participants mentioned that it is an easy-to-use and helpful app especially to fulfill their immediate needs of support.
Other opportunity areas to expand this project would be:
Provide a broad knowledge platform for the 2E community.
Improve the credibility of 2E children homeschooling.
